Police were called to a reported family violence incident involving a male, a woman and two young children on the afternoon of Saturday 21 January 2012 at a Manurewa address.

The woman and children had vacated the address prior to Police arrival.

Police located a male in the garage who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol while behaving in an extremely aggressive manner toward Police staff.

Police attempted to negotiate with the male who then armed himself with a garden spade and an LPG cylinder leaking gas. Police responded by deploying OC spray which had little effect. A taser was also used.

The male continued to display aggression towards Police and refused to comply with directions. He advanced upon Police and was shot in his leg.

An ambulance was already at the scene and first aid was immediate.

The male is currently in a stable condition.

A Police investigation has been launched. Detective Inspector Dave Lynch will lead this investigation with oversight from the Upper North Districts Detective Superintendent Andy Lovelock.

A separate investigation will be conducted by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

Preliminary analysis of video footage confirms the above version of events and the courageous actions of the Officers involved.

Police will make no further comment on this matter until charges are laid.
