Maori Party co-leaders Dr. Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia have today responded to the consultation with Maori document released by the government today with mixed reaction.

“On one hand we are pleased that there has been further consideration of embedding the importance of the Treaty of Waitangi into every part of the document” said Dr. Sharples.

“On the other hand, we still consider the issue of the Treaty to be of utmost importance, and it is critical that tangata whenua are able to engage in a meaningful consultation process.”

“We are aware of the tight timeframe for consultation and call on Maori experts, and those with views on this issue to start developing bodies of analysis for use by tangata whenua on this kaupapa” said Tariana Turia.

“While we have done some initial analysis, and would like to take out the option (3) to remove the treaty clause altogether, we recognise that it is up to our people to determine for themselves what is right for tangata whenua.”

“We are hopeful that the Crown recognises the serious nature of the concerns held by Maori, and the breadth and depth of issues that have arisen" said Turia.

“We urge the Government to keep an open mind when entering these consultations, and to act within the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi – in the spirit of partnership, participation and protection” said Dr. Sharples.

“Good start, now it’s time to see where it goes from here.”
