Search finds body in Western Bay of Plenty

Western Bay of Plenty Police this evening dealt with an incident in the Te Puna / Omokoroa harbour area.

A 53 year old Tauranga man was with his family at a beach in this area. He and two of his children were in the harbour gathering pipi, when the children started to have difficulties.

The man went to their assistance and managed to turn the children towards the shore. Another family member went to the assistance of the children, however on turning to check on the male, he had vanished from sight.

Police staff, family of the man, Tauranga Coastguard and TECT Rescue Helicopter were involved a search for the male.

Unfortunately a body was located at about 1730hrs.

The matter has been referred to the Coroner. No further details, including the name of the deceased, will be released at this stage.
