About Brian Brake
Brake first made his name as an international photojournalist in the 1950s and 1960s, photographing for picture magazines such as Life and Paris-Match. He first gained international prominence with his Monsoon photo-essay on India in 1961.

Brake was also known for the best-selling 1963 book (co-produced with writer Maurice Shadbolt), New Zealand, Gift of the Sea. In the 1980s his name became synonymous with images of taonga from the Te Māori exhibition.

The exhibition Brian Brake: Lens on the World is on display at Rotorua Museum until 22 April and features 165 photographic reproductions from Te Papa's collection. It is the first comprehensive retrospective of this notable Magnum photographer's work, spanning his forty-year career.
