New Plymouth’s newly renovated dog pound is opening its gates to the public.

Next Tuesday (21 February) the public can have a look at the expanded facilities which enable a higher standard of care as well as a necessary service during significant civil defence emergencies.

“If there is an emergency that requires a section of the city to be evacuated, we can hold more than 100 dogs as part of the response from Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management,” says Team Leader Animal Control Jim Aitken.

“On a day to day basis we can take up to 40 dogs, each in an individual pen. The dogs also have access to sunlight and an exercise yard, and it’s easier for the public to view the animals we are holding.

“The renovations have made a big difference to the quality of care we can provide.”

The upgrade of the facility on Rifle Range Road took four months complete.

The public opening is from 5pm to 6pm next Tuesday. Everyone who turns up will go in the draw for prizes, which include a free dog registration, a $100 desexing voucher from New Plymouth Vet Group, microchipping vouchers, and give-aways from Pet Essentials.

“People are welcome to bring their dogs and join us on a dog-friendly guided walk through Te Rewa Rewa at 6pm. Just be sure to bring a doggy-doo bag and a lead,” says Mr Aitken.
