A woman is dead following a head-on collision on State Highway One south of Dunedin.

The crash, which is thought to have occurred around 1pm, happened about 5km south of the Allanton turn-off to Dunedin International Airport on State Highway One, at the northern entrance to the Taieri River Bridge.

The female driver of a southbound car has died in the crash.

The male driver of the northbound vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Fire Service, Police and St John Ambulance have been attending at the scene.

State Highway One has been closed for some time but a detour is in place.

It's expected that the road will re-open within the next hour.

Initial information suggests that one of the cars has crossed the centre line.

A serious crash investigator is currently at the scene.

Police are currently working to notify next of kin.

There are no further details available at this time.
