With thousands of people expected to descend on Ohakea this weekend for the Royal New Zealand Air Force's 75th Anniversary Air Show, visitors are being asked by Police to pay attention to the roads as well as the skies.

The event takes place at the Ohakea Air Base on Saturday, 31 March. Gates open to the public at 8am with the air displays starting at 10am and running through to 3.15pm.

As a result speed and parking restrictions will be in place between Sanson and Bulls and anyone who doesn't need to travel through the area is advised to find an alternative route.

Vehicles travelling south to the event from Bulls will find themselves directed into a feeder lane that will take them through the main entrance of the Air Base. Vehicles travelling north to the event from Sanson will turn on to Fagan Road and be directed into car parks. Vehicles will exit via the same route.

Operations Manager Inspector Dave White said: "Saturday is set to be a very special day for the Air Force and for New Zealand and we don't want it spoiled through frustrations on the road. The weather forecast is looking promising and there will be plenty of static displays as well as the air show, so pack a picnic and make the most of the celebrations and be prepared to stagger your arrival and departure to help minimise a mad rush on the roads.

"Most importantly please be patient and follow the direction of the Police, Air Force personnel and Traffic Management staff. They will be working hard to keep things moving smoothly but with the anticipated numbers there will inevitably be some congestion."

Drivers are also being asked to remember the new give-way rules as there are intersections in the area that are likely to be busy.

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Kim Perks on 027 234 8256.
