The OPTN text messaging service for Rodney residents will be tested this daylight savings at midday on Sunday 1 April 2012, 12pm.

Rodney residents have the option of notification of civil defence emergencies sent direct to their mobile phones. This is a service provided by Auckland Council and Auckland-based communications provider OPTN limited.

The service is free. However, mobile phone users will have to register their numbers to have the service provided.

This service is based on an existing texting product provided by OPTN, but has been modified for emergency alerting purposes specifically for Rodney residents.

At this stage the messaging service will be activated only in the event of an official warning situation including tsunami or an impending localised emergency such as a cyclone.

The system is tested twice a year, at the beginning and end of daylight saving. The next test will take place in late September.

Registration can be made by texting OPTNRDCD to 2678

You will receive a confirmation message back confirming registration was successful.

If you do not receive confirmation please contact the Auckland Council on 09 301 0101.

You can also deregister by calling (0800 894 127).
