A 51 year old Counties Manukau Police Constable is in a stable condition at Middlemore Hospital after he was assaulted while working in Waiuku last night.

The Constable and his partner had been attempting to arrest a man who had been the driver of a car involved in a high speed car crash.

During the arrest the man head butted the Constable knocking him unconscious.

The injuries suffered by the Constable include a broken nose, lost tooth and concussion.

A 20 year old Waiuku man has been arrested and will appear at the Pukekohe District Court today on a serious assault charge as well as resisting arrest and multiple driving related charges.
