Some of New Zealand’s world class age group talent showed off their skills to effect at the RaboDirect New Zealand BMX Championships in Rotorua over Easter.

Many of the young stars who achieved top honours at last year’s BMX World Championships in Copenhagen were to the fore in the championships.

World champion Lachlan Stevens-McNab, from the host Rotorua club, took out the eight years title, unbeaten throughout all of his races at the weekend.

Two time world champion Rico Bearman (Waitakere) took out the boys’ nine years honours, also unbeaten.

Maynard Peel, the star of New Zealand’s win over Australia in the Mighty 11s test last year, won the 13 years title for his Waiuku-based Sunset Coast club.

Hamilton’s Kaly Harcourt, third in her age group at last year’s world championships, won the girls’ 11 years final over Jessie Smith (Gisborne).

There was a world class battle in the girls’ 15 years class where Rangiora’s Tahlia Hansen, runner-up in the Challenge class at Copenhagen, edged out Gisborne’s Abigail Fox, who won the world championship for the Cruiser class last year. Both riders went through unbeaten in the qualifying heats.

There were riders from four years of age to over 70 competing in the annual event that attracted around 700 competitors.
