Rotorua Police are appealing for information from the public as part of their investigation into a break in and destruction of trees at the Scion Crown Research property in Sala Street, Whakarewarewa, last weekend.

Detective Senior Sergeant Zane Smith, Rotorua CIB, said more than 300 genetically modified trees were destroyed in the incident which is thought to have happened  sometime between Monday 9 April and Tuesday morning 10 April.

The break in was noticed by a security patrol on Tuesday morning and reported to police.

“There has been a significant effort by someone to cut through perimeter fencing and get into the secure area,” Detective Senior Sergeant Smith said.  “This would have taken a determined approach and taken some time.”

Police aren’t prepared to speculate on who might be responsible for the attack but say public information is critical in finding the person or people involved.

“We’re especially interested in sightings of suspicious activity, people or vehicles at or near the property during the weekend, particularly during Monday or overnight on Tuesday.

“It’s possible that being a holiday weekend someone saw activity that looked out of place.”

Anyone with information that will help the inquiry is asked to call Rotorua Police on 07 348 0099, or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
