All Black captain and coach made a legendary contribution
Labour Leader David Shearer today paid tribute to legendary All Blacks captain and coach Sir Fred Allen.
“I was very sorry to hear that Sir Fred Allen had passed away, our thoughts and sympathy are with his family and friends.
New Zealanders will remember Sir Fred for his strong leadership and enormous contribution to rugby as an All Black and a coach.
“He was a real Kiwi hero, a humble man and a high achiever.
“He achieved many successes during his career including playing for the All Blacks from 1946 to 1949, and coaching the team to victory in all14 tests from 1966 to 1969, a remarkable achievement.
“Sir Fred Allen was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rugby in 2010.
“He will be remembered for his dedication and commitment not only as an All Black but a mentor for so many in the game,” David Shearer said.
