ASHBURTON

A 50-year old Ashburton woman has died following a crash involving a scooter and a small truck, at Tinwald, near Ashburton, early this afternoon.

Sergeant Sean Buchanan of Ashburton Police says the woman was the rider of an electric cycle or scooter-type vehicle, which had been travelling west on Grahams Road.

"It appears the scooter was turning right into Grove Farm Road when it was hit by the Mazda truck at the intersection.

"The victim was reported to be deceased at the scene."

The crash occurred shortly before 1.00pm.

The name of the victim is expected to be released tomorrow after next of kin have been notified and formal identification is complete.

Sergeant Buchanan says the weather was fine and dry, and road conditions were good. Alcohol and speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Police Serious Crash Unit are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash, and the Police Commercial Vehicle Investigations Unit (CVIU) also attended the scene.

Grahams Rd has been cordoned off for much of the afternoon but is expected to be open again this evening.
