WELLINGTON CITY

Wellington Police are continuing to investigate an alleged sexual assault which occurred in Seatoun early last week.

Around 9:15pm on Monday 14 May, a woman in her early 20's was walking along Ludlam Street, near St Anthony's School, where she was grabbed from behind and dragged a short distance into the school grounds before being sexually assaulted.

Officer in charge of the Wellington CIB Detective Inspector Paul Basham says the victim, a European visitor on a working visa, was left traumatised by the incident.

"We are still awaiting forensic results following a thorough scene examination which was completed. We've spoken to a number of residents in the vicinity of Ludlam Street but are yet to identify the offender responsible."

Paul Basham is hopeful screening the case on TV2's Police Ten-7 show next week will generate further valuable information from the public.

The victim described the offender as a dark-skinned male, possibly in his early twenties, around 180 - 185 centimetres tall (6 foot to 6 foot 2), wearing a khaki-coloured top with a hood and a black beanie.

"We know that a female was walking her dog along Marine Parade around 7pm on the night of the incident and noticed a male, fitting the offender's description, walking a dog, with a curly tail."

He says Police are keen to hear from anyone who may recall being approached inappropriately in the last few days, weeks or months in the Eastern Suburbs.

"We're still keen to hear from anyone who saw or heard anyone or anything suspicious on the evening of the incident, who has not already spoken to Police."

Anyone with any information should contact Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
