Victoria University's alumni and friends from fields as diverse as business, music and medical research have been recognised in the 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours.

Recipients include Victoria graduates Maarten Wevers, CNZM, and Dr Roderick Deane, who were made Knights Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM). Mr Wevers was acknowledged for his services to the State and Dr Deane was recognised for services to business and the community.

John Shewan—chief executive of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, chair of the Victoria Business School Advisory Board and Victoria graduate—was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to business. Victoria's 2011 honorary doctorate recipient Michael Houstoun was also made a CNZM for services as a pianist.

Graham Malaghan, chairman of the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research and son of the Institute's generous benefactor Len Malaghan, was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to medical research and philanthropy.

Former Victoria student Bret McKenzie was made an ONZM for services to music and film.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Pat Walsh congratulated those bestowed with honours.

"I am delighted to see our friends and alumni receive fitting acknowledgement for their significant contribution to New Zealand. Congratulations to you all."
