Storm Update

The major front passing through Nelson and Tasman has now died down, with winds down to 20kmph across the region.

All rivers levels across the region are now dropping and will continue to drop throughout the night. There are no concerns about high river levels moving forward.

According to the MetService, the northwest ranges of Nelson will see more rain before midnight but then it should all taper off.

Snow will continue to fall at high elevations and road closures may be likely into tomorrow. A full list of affected roads is below.

There are multiple slips and debris along the road from Riwaka to Kaiteriteri but the road is open.

There are multiple reports of surface flooding and trees being blown over onto roads all across the region. The respective councils are dealing with issues as they arise. In Richmond, contractors are patrolling streets to deal with felled trees. Residents are asked to contact their council customer service office to report any debris or fallen trees on roads.

The Collingwood Rubbish and Recycling Centre will be closed until Friday due to minor flooding.

Rabbit Island Reserve is closed due to fallen tree branches, and in Richmond, both Washbourne Gardens and Bill Wilkes Reserve are also closed for minor flooding and fallen tree branches.

In Nelson, Isel Park remains closed due to windy conditions and the risk of falling tree branches and Tahunanui Reserve back beach also remains closed due to storm tide debris and risk of falling tree branches.

Residents should avoid any fallen trees in reserves and on walkways and also should pay attention to possible power lines that may be down due to high winds. Report any instances to the appropriate council.

Earlier today, Abel Tasman Drive at Pohara was closed in various places due to debris and water inundating the road during high tide. There was some damage to steps on a rock wall beside the cycleway, but this has been cleared. There may be an ongoing issue, however, and contractors are monitoring it. Also, Beach Road in Collingwood was cleared of debris that washed across the road at high tide.

Earlier today, Murchison experienced minor flooding that affected one commercial property, one residential property and the Recreation Centre in Fairfax and Hampden Streets, but his has now cleared. A few slips were reported in the hills as well, but they didn’t affect roads, properties or waterways.

Nelson Tasman Emergency Management will continue to monitor the situation overnight.
