Wellington Police still seeking witness to sexual assault last month

Wellington Police are continuing to seek witnesses who came to the aid of a young woman following an alleged sexual assault on the 23rd of May.

Detective Sergeant Luke Cameron of the Wellington CIB says the incident occurred around 9pm on Wednesday 23 May, where the 19 year old female victim was walking along a pathway between Taranaki Street and Tasman Street (near Wellington High School and Massey University).

"As the victim was walking down the path towards Tasman Street, she was grabbed from behind and dragged off the path a short distance by the offender and assaulted."

Detective Sergeant Cameron says an Asian male wearing blue knee-length shorts, a white singlet and basketball shoes, helped the victim by walking her to Tasman Street, where another couple assisted.

"We still really want to speak with this male in relation to what he may have witnessed that evening."

The offender has been described as Mäori, in his late teens or early twenties of slim build, with acne on his cheeks, around five foot six to five foot seven in height with short black hair. The was softly spoken and was wearing a plain black hooded sweatshirt, dark trousers, black beanie and was carrying a grey backpack.
