Southern Police Remind Drivers To Take Extra Care

Southern Police are reminding drivers to take extra care on the roads around Southland and Otago as extreme weather conditions are forecast to hit the region.

Acting Southern Road Policing Manager, Snr Sgt Steve Larking, says the chilly conditions and forecast snow to low levels are a timely reminder that winter is well and truly here and we need to adapt our driving habits accordingly.

Snr Sgt Larking said that there had already been a number of vehicle crashes across the district over the past week as a result of people driving too fast in icy conditions.

Driving tips for winter weather include:

• Drive at a safe speed for the conditions and avoid braking heavily in icy conditions

• Plan to take extra time on your journey

• Increase your following distances if the road conditions are poor

• Before you set out, make sure your windscreen is clear and defrosted and check your vehicles tyres, brakes and lights

• Be prepared with warm clothes in the car, food and have your cell phone fully charged

• Carry chains if advised by your local council.

"We remind people to get the latest information about road closures and the conditions of driving routes  from NZTA or their local council and to plan their journeys according to the weather and road conditions,'' he said.
