Founder and chief providore Greig Buckley said  "it is a real challenge for small producers across New Zealand to get their products promoted and distributed in a cost effective way, so I set up Kai as a leading platform on which they can tell their story and sell their product. And of course the benefit for consumers who appreciate the fine specialist foods they may have discovered at a Farmers Market or on their travels, is that now they can easily find and buy the food on line. We keep stocks in a central warehouse, so we can immediately put together an order with foods from many different artisans, and send it to the customer in one delivery, saving  time and courier costs"

 

At this stage Kai is selling only shelf stable products, not fresh, but they will be launching a Cheese Club in the near future. Greig added "fresh produce obviously has significant logistics issues, but they can be overcome using unique programmes like subscription cheese clubs - we have many requests for specialist cheeses, which can be difficult to find, especially outside the main cities"
