train v car crash 17/07/12

OTAKI

At about 1.40pm on Tuesday 17th July 2012 a Freight train traveling at about 60-65kph north to Palmerston North from Wellington struck a vehicle on a private level crossing in Mary Crest area near Otaki.

The vehicle was shunted about 15m along the track and pushed off to the right. The train driver had activated his emergency brake immediately he saw the vehicle. The train continued for around 350m along the track.

Members of the public who had not seen crash but arrived just after went to the immediate aid of the stricken male.

The single male occupant, Mr Adam Awad, was flown using the Westpac Helicopter to Wellington Hospital.

The train driver was not injured but was shocked and concerned for the occupant of the car.

Mr Awad underwent surgery and as of yesterday was described as in a serious condition.

State Highway 1 was closed for approximately 1 hour for the helicopter to land and remove Mr Awad.

Serious Crash, Photography and various other Police units attended the scene.
