Council pays tribute to the late Don Bethune

Hamilton City Council has paid tribute to former councillor Don Bethune, who died aged 84.

Mr Bethune served three terms as a city councillor, from 1965 to 1974, and also held the roles of the President of the Social Credit political party and as Wel Energy Trust Chairman.

Commenting on behalf of the current Council, Mayor Julie Hardaker said: “Mr Bethune was a passionate Hamiltonian who was known for his commitment to the city and its community, and his forthright views on many matters. He was a deep thinker and innovator.”

“The city has lost one of its most spirited citizens and hardest-working servants. Our condolences have been extended to the Bethune family, and our thoughts are with them at this time.”

Mayor Hardaker said the flag above the Council building would fly at half-mast tomorrow (Tuesday, 24 July) in honour of a man who made a significant contribution to the city.

Mayor Hardaker will join several other Councillors attending Mr Bethune’s funeral service, which is being held tomorrow. Council will mark Mr Bethune’s passing with a minute’s silence at its 16 August meeting.
