Police appeal for information on whereabouts of motorbike involved in Huntly crash

Huntly Police are appealing for information from the public in an effort to locate a motorbike removed from the scene of a crash that they say could hold key evidence in the ensuing crash investigation.

Sergeant Juliet Burgess of the Huntly Strategic Traffic Unit said the intersection of Harris St and Fairfield Ave is still closed while crash investigators carry out their preliminary examination of the crash scene following a collision between a motorbike and a stationary tow truck about 4.30pm.

"The investigation is still in its early stages but indications from witnesses are that the motorcyclist has turned off Harris St and been heading west on Fairfield Ave when he has ridden into the back of a stationary tow truck.

"We are still working to formally identify the rider who we believe is a 36-year-old local man. The rider
was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and he has been taken to Waikato Hospital suffering from what was described as critical injuries."

Ms Burgess said working out the cause of the crash was made all the more difficult for investigators because local residents had removed the motorbike before Police arrived.

"The vehicles involved are critical in our investigation so we can build up a picture of what has actually occurred.

"We're asking that anyone with information on the whereabouts of the motorbike make contact with Huntly Police on 07 828 7560. Alternatively information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
