Labour Leader David Shearer has offered his congratulations to runner Nick Willis on his selection as New Zealand’s flagbearer for the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

“To lead your country’s team out into the Olympic stadium is a huge honour for any athlete and Nick is following in some pretty famous footsteps. I know he was a popular choice.

“Apparently as a youngster his little sister used to make him run around the block to burn off his energy. Since channelling that energy Nick has become a focused and incredibly determined athlete.

“Being named flagbearer is testament to that. My colleagues and I send him our warmest congratulations and look forward to seeing him, and other members of the Kiwi team, on the winners’ podium again,” said David Shearer

Labour’s Sport and recreation spokesperson Louisa Wall said Nick Willis was a superb choice as team captain and would be an inspiration to our other Olympians.

“I wish every athlete personal best performances that reflect the commitment and dedication they have made to performing at the Olympics for themselves and families, their sporting organisations and all New Zealanders, she said.

“Kia kaha. New Zealand stands with you.”
