WELLINGTON CITY

A warm, dry home is a healthy home.

But keeping your house warm in winter can be a real challenge. All the more reason to take up our offer of a free home assessment and find out how your home rates when it comes to energy use.

You'll get impartial, comprehensive advice from our service provider, Home&dry, simple tips on heating, insulation, curtains, lighting and water use, and a detailed action plan.

So far, more than 500 Wellington homeowners have taken up our offer - and Jill Shaw was the 500th.

Her family has since invested in a ground vapour barrier - heavy black polythene laid onto the earth under the house to stop cold, damp air rising into their home.

Jill highly recommends getting your home assessed. "We noticed an immediate difference," she says. "That cold, damp feeling in the house has gone and it's easier to heat. With a new baby, we really need our home to be as warm as it can be."

The assessor will bring easy-to-install products - such as low-flow shower heads, hot water pipe lagging and draught excluders - and install these on the spot if you want. The Council will pay 50 percent of the cost of these products up to a total of $115.

The home energy saver programme is part of our long-term goal for Wellington to become an eco-city. We want as many Wellingtonians as possible to be living in warm, dry, healthy homes with affordable energy bills. Collectively, this will help to reduce the city's carbon footprint.
