Council praised for getting into hot water

Hamilton City Council is being recognised for being one of only three councils nationwide to respond to central Government’s call to make it easier for homeowners to adopt energy efficient heating in their homes through the waiver of consent fees.

The New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy launched in October this year is a key part of the Government’s response to meeting its energy, climate change, sustainability and economic transformation goals. The strategy sets out a detailed action plan for increasing the uptake of energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy programmes across the country and to make these actions part of the normal behaviour of New Zealanders.

In one response to the strategy, Hamilton City Council has ensured that anyone who wishes to install solar energy hot water into their home will not incur building consent charges (normally $215).

This Friday, Government spokesperson for energy efficiency Jeannette Fitzsimons and EECA CEO Mike Underhill will be in Hamilton to recognise this response and present an award to Hamilton City Council in acknowledgement of its work to promote energy efficiency and sustainable urban development.
