WELLINGTON CITY

Look out for a fun, new series of short videos online involving Mrs Farthing, 'The Friendly Cyclist', with a voiceover by Stephen Fry.

Go online and get safety tips on how to negotiate intersections and shared lanes, being a courteous rider, making hand signals and eye contact with drivers - all in a retro, lighthearted style.

Cycle Aware Wellington received a $3,500 grant from the Council's Safe and Sustainable fund for the campaign, which is made by Little Fighter Films.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says we support initiatives like this because it fits in with our Wellington 2040: Smart Capital vision - particularly the 'Eco-city' pillar.

"One of the main aims of Eco-city is to use our natural resources to our advantage, but not to abuse them. Encouraging people to cycle rather than take the car is all part of it.

"Commuter cycling is a good transport choice. It's convenient and saves money - and reduces the city's pollution," says Mayor Wade-Brown.
