GISBORNE

The East Coast Forestry Project (the ECFP) grant applications closing dates have been extended until July 30 for the 2007 grant round.

The extension of the closing dates will enable the ECFP to receive grant applications under a modified direct grant system which is due to be in place this year.

The ECFP was established in 1992 to address severe erosion in the Gisborne District. The ECFP has a single objective to achieve sustainable management on identified target land. The ECFP’s objective is achieved by providing grant to the landowners of the target land to undertake soil conservation treatments. The scheme was initially administered through a tender system.

In 2006 the Government agreed to modify the tender system for administering the ECFP grant to the direct grant system. The Government is expected to make decisions soon on proposed grant rates for 2007 and to amend the Forestry (East Coast) Regulations 2000.
