WELLINGTON CITY

Wellington City Council has made an early decision to cancel the Rugby Fanzone due to tomorrow's (8 September) severe weather forecast.

The forecast for Wellington is severe northwest gales with gusts of 140 kmh in exposed places.

The Council's Manager of Community Events, Rebecca Hardie, says if the forecast is correct, the Fanzone could not be set up and run safely.

"Our main objective is to welcome Argentina and All Blacks fans to the capital for their first match against the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship," says Rebecca.

"Fans will still enjoy the game live at Westpac Stadium and I know the Argentinean community, local fans and visitors are super-excited about the match."

Wellington primary schools took part in a flag design competition where the concept was to bring together the cultures of New Zealand and Argentina.

"Instead of flying the flags in the Fanzone, our volunteers will fly them down Lambton Quay, Featherston and Willis Streets from 5.30pm with the drumming support of Batucada.

"They created some amazing designs so we are pleased we can still show off their works to add a buzz of colour and noise to the city."
