AUCKLAND

Auckland artist Matt Davison ventures to Melbourne this week to expand his career and painting style.

Matt has proved popular with his works of Auckland city and surrounds and has paintings in collections across the world.

"Matt's work will value up well, I sense the work of a huge vivid imagination, coupled with fantasy, and exaggerated impressionism." Andrew Doyle, The Age, Melbourne.

Infonews.co.nz reporter Peter Hodge spoke with Matt this week about his art, history and where he is going next.

Born the sun of the successful photo-realist painter "Don Wilson" it would come as no shock that art would play a major part in Matt's life.

Even at age five Matt spent hours painting in  his fathers studio.

Later in life Matt would paint at school, having his first commercial piece in the lobby of Wellington's top hotel The Park Royal.

At the time Matt's work was influenced by the underground and infamous New Zealand expressionist painter "Philip Clairmont", with the large piece resembling the work of the famous painter.

After attending Wellington School of Design, Matt ventured into the world of film industry, where acting and production saw  Matt work on some of New Zealand's more well known film and television projects.

In 2004 Matt ventured to Australia where he took up painting again, further expanding and defining his craft back in New Zealand a few years later.

Since then, Matt has become recognized as a unique technician of modern Expressionism, often the works show hints of a more Impressionist style's that stem from Matt's fondness of Monet ad Renoir.

"I would endure the frustrations to achieve, some thing great. Monet tells triumphant stories, in every painting he created. There is no point to me otherwise, " Matt says.

Matt has works in collection's in London, Melbourne, Glasgow, Canada and New Zealand.
