WELLINGTON CITY

The first part of a long-term plan to rejuvenate Kilbirnie's town centre starts this week.

We're focusing on improving the main shopping street, Bay Road - so more people will want to visit, shop and do business there. This includes extending and improving the pedestrian areas and upgrading the lighting to help make the street safer at night. All going well, the work should be complete by the end of March 2013.

The work will include improving the main pedestrian crossing points on Bay Road, creating attractive new pedestrian areas, widening and upgrading the footpaths, new seating, landscaping and street trees, an improved parking layout and a mix of 30- and 60-minute parking.

These improvements will significantly improve the look and feel of the town centre and are the first stage in a long-term plan to revitalise the area. We hope you can bear with us and continue to support the local businesses over the next few months while this work is done.

The Council's Built Environment Portfolio Leader, Councillor Iona Pannett, says the Coutts Street and Bay Road corner will also be getting a make-over.

"At the moment, this area is being used as a car park. We plan to convert it into a shared space, which will accommodate some parking but also provide an attractive public area with better footpaths.

"It will be a distinctive 'southern gateway' to the town centre where markets and other events could happen."
