Police in the Riccarton West area are warning residents to remain vigilant after some recent burglaries in the area.

This increase follows a six week period where there were no burglaries in Riccarton West.

Since the 1st of September, there have been five burglaries in the area, in Dallas Street, Maxwell Street, Rattray Street and Peverel Street.

Two occurred during the day and three occurred at night with the majority occurring on a week day.

Laptop computers have been the main item stolen.

"Police are interested in any suspicious activity in the area in recent times, particularly if anyone has seen a person of interest, described as a male New Zealand European in his early 30's, six foot tall with long hair, pulled back, wearing dark clothing," said Senior Constable Dave Brunton

The Riccarton Neighbourhood Policing Team is encouraging residents to be vigilant and step up their prevention and security.

"Some residents are still leaving houses unlocked or insecure and valuables lying around and this is a particular problem with the student community," Mr Brunton said.

Police are always interested in suspicious activity. Don't hesitate to call Police on 111 if you see a crime being committed or witness suspicious activity.

To reduce the risk of a burglary, make sure you:

  • Lock your doors and windows
  • Record the serial numbers of expensive electronic items and photograph these and other valuables. Visit the SNAP website at www.snap.org.nz for advice

  • Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Install an alarm system

  • Get security lights fitted.
  • Keep your house secure when you are out in the garden or yard.

A good way of combating burglars is to get to know your neighbours by joining a Neighbourhood Support Group. Visit the NSG website at www.nscanterburbury.org.nz.

Remember when the summer months are approaching, and the weather is getting warmer, people will be more inclined to leave windows and doors open during the day and night. It is important to remember that these conditions are ideal for opportunistic burglars to take advantage.

A Neighbourhood Support Group meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday the 3rd of October at the Riccarton Baptist Church Hall on Peverel Street.  Prevention advice will be given and residents can bring along their valuables for security marking.

If you have any information about criminal activity you can give that information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
