The long-standing manager of New Plymouth District’s assets is moving to Wellington City Council.

General Manager Infrastructure Anthony Wilson has been with NPDC since 1983, but from November will be WCC’s Chief Asset Officer.

“My wife Juliet and I stayed in New Plymouth to bring up our children in one of the best environments in the world, but they’ve now left home so we’re looking for a new challenge,” he says.

“One of the big issues in Wellington is community resilience. It’s a city with a lot more challenges associated with not only the earthquake risk but also some limited access issues – such as the number of suburbs that have very limited road access to them.

“I’ll also be introducing consistent asset management practices throughout the organisation.”

Mr Wilson says the greatest change he has seen during his career in New Plymouth was the 1989 local government reform, which saw four councils amalgamate to form NPDC. “That brought with it the need to address a considerable deferred investment in the smaller towns in the areas of water, sewerage, stormwater and solid waste.

“Another significant work was the water augmentation project which significantly strengthened the reliability of the water supply for the whole of the district.”

Earlier this year Mr Wilson was seconded to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority to help plan the development of Christchurch’s ‘horizontal infrastructure’ of water and wastewater systems.

Mr Wilson is a Chartered Professional Engineer, a Fellow and past-President of IPENZ (Institution of professional Engineers New Zealand, a life member and past-President of Water New Zealand, a Fellow of ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers – UK), a Fellow of CIWEM (Chartered institution of Water and Environmental managers – UK), a Fellow of Engineers Australia, and a Colonel Commandant of the Royal New Zealand Engineers.
