Bond Street Access Changes

WELLINGTON CITY

As part of improving pedestrian and vehicle safety on the Golden Mile, we're proposing to make some changes on Bond Street, which will also affect parking on Mercer Street.

Consultation begins today and Wellingtonians have until 5.00pm, Friday 26 October to have a say.

The changes could take effect from later this year, starting with closing the Bond Street exit for vehicles onto Willis Street, where there have been seven reported crashes since the end of 2010. A temporary barrier would be replaced by permanent bollards early next year.

Car parking would not be affected - in fact the number of spaces would probably increase. The motorcycle bays on Mercer Street and the taxi rank on Bond Street would swap streets, and the loading zone on Mercer Street would move to the southern side of the street.

The Council's Transport Portfolio Leader, Councillor Andy Foster, says, "we're proposing a model with Bond Street similar to that of Grey Street, with better parking and loading, and extra pavement space for cafe tables and pedestrians. It would make the street a much safer and more pedestrian-friendly place".

We're talking to property owners, residents and retailers in the Bond Street area to get their feedback and keep them up-to-date with the proposed changes.
