What key elements should drive future development of New Plymouth’s central area?

Today (Wednesday) the Council has launched a survey to get the public’s feedback on what they like and dislike about the city’s central area, and the design elements they would like to see.

“The feedback we receive will help us develop an urban design framework which will guide our development plans in this area,” says Manager Environmental Strategy and Policy Colin Comber.

Last year the Council became a signatory to the Urban Design Protocol, which uses best practice design in the urban environment to assist development.

The Council has also received comments from the public over the years about issues in the central area.

Mr Comber says the survey will identify what the issues are for residents, property owners, businesses, shoppers and other users in the area – which is from the coastline to Lemon/Fulford streets, and from Dawson to Hobson streets.

“What is it about the design and operation of the central area that users don’t like? What barriers or difficulties are there?

“We also want to know what kind of urban area people want for the central city. What should be located here? And what spaces and buildings that are there now do they like the most?

“We want to hear from everyone who has an opinion about the central city.”

The survey is online at newplymouthnz.com/CentralAreaSurvey. The Council is also sending out letters and hard copies of the survey to 1,300 addresses in the central area.

The webpage also has a site survey document which covers comprehensively the significance and issues of the central city, and the related Council policies and strategies.

The survey closes on 9 November.
