A fire that seriously damaged a patrol car at a suburban Hamilton Station overnight is being treated as suspicious.

Overnight shift manager, Acting Senior Sergeant Neville Ross, said emergency services were called to the Hamilton East Police Station about 8.15pm and arrived to find the patrol car well ablaze.

"A window of the car had been smashed and a fire started. Significant damage has been caused to the interior of the car which will undergo forensic examination today.

"Police are grateful for several calls to the 111 phone service and we have spoken to a number of people who witnessed the fire. At present we would like to hear from anyone with information about a white car seen in the vicinity of the station cap park between 8-8.15pm."

Anyone with information on the white car or who may know the identity of the occupant or occupants is asked to contact Sergeant Shelly Begbie at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 8586200.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
