A short history of Pencarrow Lighthouse is one of a handful of projects to secure backing in the latest round of funding from the council’s heritage fund.

The fund makes $15,000 available each year to promote heritage conservation in the city through advocacy, education and publications.

Brendon Veale, of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, says the lighthouse has an “amazing history” and attracts thousands of visitors each year. He says the trust is working on a brochure that will chronicle the building’s past as well as the natural history of the area.

The brochure will be made available at a variety of businesses, tourism operators and information sites later in the year.

“The idea is to help promote this part of the region and encourage day trips by families, groups and schools,” says Brendon.

Other recipients of heritage funding for 2011-12 included Hutt Community Radio Trust, to record interviews with elderly war veterans, and Petone Historical Society, to produce a history of the Petone Gear Meat Company.
