Superintendent Andy McGregor has been appointed to the position of Area Commander for the newly-created Christchurch Metro Area, in the new Canterbury Police District structure.

Superintendent McGregor is currently the National Manager of Police Communications Centres, based in Wellington. He has previously been an Area Commander in Christchurch, at both the Christchurch Northern and Christchurch Southern areas.

Superintendent McGregor was also based in Christchurch for some months following the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, as officer in charge of the Operation Earthquake police response.

Canterbury District Commander Gary Knowles says Superintendent McGregor will bring a huge amount of experience from his current role as National Communications Centres Manager, and from his previous roles in Canterbury.

The appointment of a superintendent to the role reflects the size and scope of the new position, he says.

In the new role Superintendent McGregor will have responsibility for the area Response, Investigations and Prevention functions in the new Christchurch Metro Area. This will encompasses the greater Christchurch area currently covered by the Christchurch Central, Southern and Northern Areas.

At this stage no decision has been made on Superintendent McGregor's start date in the new role.

Superintendent Knowles says the existing three-area structure in Christchurch will remain in place in the meantime. He plans to have the new district structure in place by the end of this year.
