Construction of a wetland will require part of a walkway off Brooklands Road to be closed for up to seven weeks.

From next Monday (5 November), Struan Walkway from Brooklands Road to Plympton Street will be closed to the public. The sections from Plympton to Vogeltown Park and Struan Avenue will remain open.

The Council is building a wetland along the stream and a forebay – a small dam-like structure – in the Truby King Dell pond to reduce the amount of sediment that flows into Pukekura Park’s lake system.

“The Struan Walkway stream is particularly silty so stopping its sediment before it enters the park will make a big difference to the lakes’ water quality,” says Curator Pukekura Park Chris Connolly.

Additionally, a diversion will be built so that the Kaimata Stream, which is just within Pukekura Park’s boundary, will flow into the dell pond. Sediment will be removed from the pond regularly.

The first stage of the project involved a forebay being built in the TSB Bowl of Brooklands lake earlier this month, to trap silt from the Maranui Gully stream.

As part of the project the closed-off section of Struan Walkway will be improved so that construction vehicles can gain access.

“When it is reopened, that section of the walkway will be much more accessible for users,” says Mr Connolly.
