Work has begun on the removal about 30 trees from Awanui Cemetery.

A shelter belt of alders is being thinned out and an unhealthy hedgerow of cypresses is being removed.

District Arborist Conrad Pattison says the stand of alders has become quite dense. “We’ll be taking out the poor specimens and give the remaining ones the necessary space to grow well,” he says.

“The cypresses have developed canker so we’ll take them all out.”

The work is scheduled so that it will not interfere with funeral services in the cemetery. The removals will take about two weeks.

In autumn and winter next year the cemetery will be planted out with magnolias, azaleas and a variety of native plant species.
