Sixty schoolchildren are joining New Plymouth District Council on a dune planting this Monday (5 November).

The Oakura students will help plant out a section of dune between the Oakura Beach Holiday Park and Weld Road.

“A large part of this planting will help repair some of the damage caused by the rainstorm that hit in late August, with the rest being part of our usual dune management programme,” says Team Leader Parks Programmes Tina Christmas.

“The August storm cause a lot of damage and the students are keen to help get the coastline back in shape.”

The rainfall caused about eight land slips on the coastal strip between Oakura and Ahu Ahu, with one falling on the beach to below the high tide mark and another burying the Ahu Ahu public toilets.
