LOWER HUTT

Lower Hutt’s summer season of day-long outdoor markets kicks off on Thursday 6 December.

Running on Thursdays until 7 February 2013, Margaret St will be closed to traffic between Queens Drive and High St, and transformed into an outdoor market.

The Margaret St Market will operate between noon and 8.30pm, and will offer shoppers and visitors to the city more than 20 stalls selling quality arts and crafts, gourmet food and more.

Hutt City Council’s CBD Development Manager Cyndi Christensen says there’s an added appeal, with shops in and around Margaret St opting to stay open late as well.

“Margaret St is in the heart of Lower Hutt’s CBD, and it’s an easy stroll from Westfield Queensgate,” says Cyndi. “Outdoor markets bring vibrancy to the CBD, and are a great excuse for people to get out into the fresh air during the day or in the evenings.”

Stalls have been selected to offer variety and quality, and live music will be scheduled for the early evening.

“We want to create a fun atmosphere, where people can browse stalls and shops, eat some delicious food, and enjoy the entertainment.”

Because the market is outdoors, the weather will dictate whether it goes ahead every week.

“Our fickle weather is a fact of life, and we have to be prepared for the eventuality that sometimes the market will be closed if it’s pouring with rain or blowing an absolute gale,” says Cyndi.

Any notifications will be posted on our website – www.huttcity.govt.nz/margaret-st-market – as well as broadcast on the Radio Network.
