A statue to honour Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park the inspirational commander of the Royal Air Force Fighter Command No.11 Group during the Battle of Britain is unveiled on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. No.11 Group was responsible for the Air Defence of London and the South East during the battle and as a result bore the brunt of the fighting. The ceremony was overseen by members of the Park family as well as veterans of the Battle of Britain, and assembled guests were addressed by Lord Mayor Boris Johnson and the Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton. Following a flypast by Spitfire and Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby the guests were escorted to a reception via a 1940's street scene featuring period re-enactors and musicians.
