Puddles - the baby kiwi - is recovering at the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre after being found near death in a Northland kauri forest.
The eight-day-old kiwi chick was starved and suffering from dehydration when found by tourists walking in the park.

Drought conditions in the region are causing strife for the local kiwi population with the normally nocturnal birds having to venture out during the day in search of food and water.

The baby bird has gained weight and is now thriving at the bird centre.
