The original mill created at the Hobbiton film set for the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
The 10-acre site on Matamata farmland chosen for Hobbiton has rolling hills, trees and a small lake that provided the setting for the mill.
Major earthworks extended the lake and reshaped some of the hills before a massive ploughing and planting operation took place. Vegetation was given a year to become properly established before filming began, except for the massive oak tree which was winched into place and foliated with hand-painted leaves and artificial acorns.
