The Chatham Islands are a group of 10 islands with a total population of 650 people. Chatham and Pitt Islands are the only ones inhabited and the main settlements are at Waitangi, Kaingaroa, Te One, Port Hutt and Owenga on Chatham Island.

The islands are served by ports at Waitangi, Flower Pot and Owenga. Shipping links are from Timaru and Napier, with direct air services to Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

The Chatham Islands are the first to see the sun. Located 800km from mainland New Zealand they are 45 minutes ahead of mainland time.

The Chatham Islands Council is the territorial local authority and is based in Waitangi
