WELLINGTON CITY

The annual Wellingtonian of the Year awards were held last week, with Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi taking out the Education award.

This award, in association with Wellington City Council, celebrates individuals who have made education their life's mission.

Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi is an advocate of Māori language education and the Kohanga Reo movement.

After 60 years working in this field, Dame Iritana still maintains a close association with iwi authorities, New Zealand Māori Council, Māori Women's Welfare League Inc and more.

Other Education category nominees were Sylvia Zuur and Linc Gaskin, founders of Chalkle.com and Sose Annandale, Principal of Russell School.

This year is the 24th Wellingtonian of the Year Awards, known endearingly as the 'Wellys', with Neville Jordan taking out the overall Wellingtonian of the Year Award.
