Families are putting themselves in danger by standing inside an eroding cave at an Urenui headland.

The cave has been growing over recent years and this summer parents with their children have been seen standing inside it.

“It is just too dangerous for people to be near that headland,” says Manager Parks Programmes Steve McGill.

“It is continually eroding – it falls apart in chunks, and there are tonnes of earth there that will collapse at some point. If that falling soil lands on anyone they could be badly hurt or killed.

“Adults need to lead by example and not explore that headland, and not let children go near it.”

Warning signs were installed at the campground more than two years ago when the cave began to form.

Mr McGill urges the public to stay on the campground side of the river.
