A recreational area in New Plymouth will be closed next week while up to 20 pine trees are removed.

The Colson Road forestry block includes a BMX track, but the forest will be closed to the public while the trees are removed from a stream’s bank.

“The stream bank is eroding and undercutting the tree roots, making them susceptible to falling over, so we need to get in there and take them out safely,” says District Arborist Conrad Pattison.

In December, one of the pine trees fell and knocked out power to the nearby SPCA.

The removal work should be finished by the end of Friday.
