Hutt City residents will again have the opportunity to sign up for free computer training at Hutt City Libraries with last year’s successful Stepping UP programme being renewed in 2013.

Libraries Manager Sandra Mann says on the back of last year’s demand Hutt City Libraries and the 2020 Communications Trust are working together to offer more training this year across a greater number of libraries.

“Last year we weren’t able to offer training at Taita and Stokes Valley libraries because our existing computer facilities weren’t suitable. But the message from residents was clear that this kind of training was much needed in their community so we’ve invested in Wi-Fi to make Stepping UP possible in these areas.

“In term one alone, 300 places will be available for training at five libraries (War Memorial Library, Wainuiomata Library, Naenae Library, Taita Library, and Stokes Valley Library) which is a great spread of opportunities across the city.”

The training is open to Hutt City residents with basic, or no computer skills. There are eight subjects to choose from in term one and a class is available for people who have never touched a computer before.

“We’ve listened to feedback from last year’s participants and changed some of the subjects offered to better suit our communities. Class times have also increased to two hours, and many of the subjects have been split into two parts so participants can learn more on each subject.”

Due to high demand bookings are essential. To see the full timetable, subjects offered and to book a place visit www.steppingup.org.nz or phone 570 6633. Term one starts Monday 18 February.

Hutt City Libraries will provide venues, PCs and Wi-Fi access and the 2020 Communications Trust will provide tutors, training materials, and laptops at the two new venues – Taita and Stokes Valley libraries.
