Six students have been taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation in a fire in New Plymouth this afternoon.

Five appliances and 1 command unit were called to Devon Intermediate shortly after 2o'clock after a teacher found a fire in the school's library.

Fire Service senior station officer Ian Drewery said the fire is under investigation.

A St John spokesperson said that the six students were transported to hospital as a precaution with minor smoke inhalation.

The scene will remain gaurded overnight until investigations resume tomorrow morning.
